‘Some of the great progress in fashion design was introduced by Madame Vionnet and her bias cut. When a fabric is cut in 45 degrees with respect to the direction of gravity, shear resistance decreases, so then a flat surface deforms in-plane. There are aesthetic advantages in having deformation of this type; the garment follows the contour of the body, and the proximity of fabric and skin generates a thin layer of air between both. This layer produces a very effective adhesion, and keeps the garment close to the body in the presence of movement, the clinging effect.’
